Art Brokerage: Chinese artist Halley Cheng creates pen drawings, rendered on wood panels and inspired by traditional Chinese painting. His work mimics the style of the Song Dynasty, which lasted for three centuries at the start of the last millennium and is considered an apex of Chinese civilization. Game Theory, Cheng's second show, consists of eight works that mix famous old paintings with characters and stories from video and board games. There are other artists employing similar gimmicks. But Cheng brings a particular Hong Kong-centric sense his work. Henry Au-Yeung, founder of Grotto, says: "In the 1970s and 1980s, a lot of Hong Kong people interested in art, were born on the mainland and then came over. Those in the current generation were born into an established hybrid system, where the different parts are reconciled already. They have confidence in the character of their art. Hong Kong culture is a mix of Japanese pop, Chinese traditions and Western influences."
